Ashburn Psychological Services

Health Psychology Services

Health Psychology is the application of psychological principles to a broad array of health-related problems.  A great deal of research and clinical experience have demonstrated that biology, behavior and social context influence health and illness and that effective treatment for many health-related problems requires that each of these factors is addressed.

Ashburn Psychological Services has expertise in applying the principles of Health Psychology to a wide range of problems, disorders and health issues including:

  • Headache, fibromyalgia, and other chronic pain conditions
  • Lyme’s Disease
  • Stress-related conditions
  • Substance abuse, including tobacco, alcohol and other drugs
  • Health anxiety and excessive worry about physical symptoms
  • Eating disorders, including binge eating, bulimia and anorexia
  • Adjustment to chronic illness, such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes
  • Weight management and dietary change
  • Exercise adherence
  • Insomnia

Psychologists at APS will evaluate each of the relevant factors influencing your specific problem and devise a personalized treatment plan to help you achieve your goals.

Ashburn Psychological Services ADHD Assessment and Treatment

Ashburn Psychological Services provides the most advanced, state of the art assessment and treatment for child, adolescent and adult ADD and ADHD. As a multidisciplinary team, we start with a comprehensive assessment conducted either by one of our highly credentialed psychiatrist’s or psychologist’s. Neuropsychological testing is sometimes warranted for diagnostic clarification inasmuch as ADD and ADHD can look like other conditions and vice versa — anxiety, depression, learning disorders, auditory processing disorder, and other developmental conditions. Diagnostic testing is sometimes required for private or public school placement and instruction.

Treatment is then individualized to the care and needs of the client. Treatment may include medication, cognitive-behavioral therapy, parent consultation and guidance and/or Cogmed Working Memory Training. Some of our clients are adamant that they do not want medication as a component to their treatment or their child’s treatment for ADD or ADHD. Much research has shown outstanding results for ADD and ADHD with evidenced based cognitive behavior therapy alone. Cogmed research studies have also shown impressive results in the treatment of ADD and ADHD.

Child Psychiatrists, Adult Psychiatrists and Forensic Psychiatrists

Over the past few decades, one of the bona fide revolutions in mental health treatment has involved the use of modern, FDA-approved medications for certain mental disorders. A careful medication regimen under close supervision of a physician can reduce overall levels of distress, promoting a more appropriate adjustment to situational stressors, as well as facilitating improvements through psychotherapy.

Medications are often combined with psychotherapy for treating mental and emotional disorders.

Ashburn Psychological Services has Board Certified Child, Adolescent, Adult and Forensic psychiatrists to treat and diagnose clients for improved mental well being.

Neuropsychological testing is a comprehensive procedure that measures and identifies the interaction between cognition, processing capacities, and psychological functioning and their impact on academic and daily behavior. This sort of comprehensive testing is recommended for cases in which a detailed but general overview of functioning is requested.

Neuropsychological testing provides quantifiable data about the following mental functions:

Short-term and long-term memory
Intelligence
Problem solving and conceptualizing
Ability to learn new skills and solve problems
Attention, concentration, and distractibility
Logical and abstract reasoning functions
Ability to understand and express language
Visual-spatial organization Visual-motor coordination
Planning, synthesizing and organizing abilities
Functional impacts on learning and information recall
Academic achievement
Impact on the way a person thinks and feels as a result of the way their brain uses information

A neuropsychological evaluation will serve to confirm or clarify diagnoses such as, dementing conditions (e.g., Alzheimer’s), developmental learning disabilities, attention/executive functioning disorders, developmental disabilities, and the effects of toxic chemicals or chronic substance abuse, to name but a few.

Testing results will offer specific recommendations to educators, consultants and employers, which can help the child, adolescent or adult adapt to the work or school setting.
